China University of Mining and Technology
Founded in 1909, China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) is a national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education. As one of China’s first institutions authorized to confer doctoral and master's degrees, CUMT also hosts a state-approved graduate school. It has been selected for several pivotal national initiatives, including the “211 Project”, the “985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform”, and the “Double First-Class” initiative. CUMT ranks 41st in the 2025 QS China University Rankings, underscoring its academic standing. The university comprises two campuses, Wenchang and Nanhu, spanning a total area of over 2.8 square kilometers. The Nanhu Campus boasts a vegetation coverage rate of 65% and is home to more than 260 species of animals, reflecting its excellent ecological environment.
Characterized by its unique, high-level focus on mining, CUMT is the only institution in China to bear the “Mining” name. Through its long-term development and with sustained support from its governing bodies, the coal and energy industries, and the wider society, the university has established an academic discipline system centered on science and engineering, highlighted by energy and resources studies, and encompassing a wide spectrum of fields from humanities and management to law, economics, education, and the arts.
CUMT has a strong global reputation in engineering-related disciplines, with its Engineering Science, Earth Science, and Environmental/Ecology disciplines ranking in the top 1‰ globally by ESI. A total of ten disciplines have ranked in the top 1% on the ESI global rankings, including Engineering, Geosciences, Materials Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Environment/Ecology, Computer Science, Social Sciences (General), Physics, and Biology & Biochemistry. The Mineral & Mining Engineering discipline has been ranked within the top 50 globally by QS for nine consecutive years, reaching the 14th worldwide in 2025.
CUMT enjoys a prime location in Xuzhou, Jiangsu—a historic city renowned for a pleasant climate and its traditional role as the “Thoroughfare to Five Provinces”. As the province's northernmost city, it is centrally situated between Beijing and Shanghai, with the “Fuxing” high-speed train connecting it to these metropolises and Nanjing in under three hours. Xuzhou's excellent infrastructure and low cost of living have earned it the distinction of being named one of “China’s Happiest Cities” five times. A crowning achievement came in 2018 when it was the only Chinese city honored with the UN-Habitat Award, recognizing its outstanding natural environment.
CUMT features advanced facilities for teaching and research, boasting 6 state key laboratories, 1 national engineering research center, 1 national engineering technology research center, 1 national-local joint engineering laboratory, 1 national university science park, 1 ministry-province co-constructed collaborative innovation center, 4 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 4 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 1 field scientific observation and research station of the Ministry of Education, 1 international cooperation joint laboratory of the Ministry of Education, and 44 other provincial/ministerial-level scientific research platforms. The university library has been selected as one of the 50 most beautiful university libraries in China, with a collection of over 20 million volumes of books and documents.
CUMT boasts a distinguished faculty of over 2,200 members. This includes 17 esteemed academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including honorary staff).
